Eyelash Extension Myths Debunked by Nazuri’s Lash Artists
The most common eyelash extension myths — that they damage natural lashes, that they’re painful, that you can’t get them wet, that they all look fake, or that they’re only for special occasions — are all false when extensions are applied correctly by a certified lash artist using quality products. Damage, discomfort, and unnatural results are symptoms of poor technique or cheap materials, not inherent problems with the treatment itself.
Eyelash extensions in Gurgaon have grown dramatically in popularity over the past few years — and so has the misinformation about them. The clients who walk into Nazuri Lashes & Beauty Studio in Sector 65 have heard it all: that extensions will make your natural lashes fall out, that they’re painful, that you’ll never be able to wash your face again, that they’re only for very dramatic looks.
Most of it is simply not true.
Our certified lash artists have collectively answered these questions hundreds of times. Here is an honest, comprehensive response to the ten most common eyelash extension myths — with the facts as they actually stand.
Myth 1: Eyelash Extensions Ruin Your Natural Lashes
The truth: Correctly applied eyelash extensions do not damage natural lashes.
This is the myth we hear most often, and it’s the one that causes the most hesitation in clients considering lash extensions for the first time. The origin of this myth is real — there are cases of people experiencing lash damage after extensions — but the cause is almost always one of three things: extensions that were too heavy for the natural lash, adhesive that wasn’t properly isolated between lashes, or the client picking or pulling at their extensions instead of having them professionally removed.
Here’s how the process works when done correctly. Each extension is applied to one individual natural lash. The extension weight is selected based on the thickness and length of the natural lash it’s being applied to — a fine, short natural lash receives a fine, lighter extension; a thick lash can support more weight. When the weight is correctly matched, the natural lash grows and sheds at its normal rate with the extension attached, causing no stress to the follicle.
The follicle is never touched. The lash itself carries the extension to the end of its natural growth cycle, then sheds as it normally would — extension and all.
At Nazuri, our lash artists are trained to assess natural lash health before every appointment and choose extension dimensions accordingly. This is not standard practice at every salon, which is partly why the myth persists.
Myth 2: Eyelash Extensions Are Painful
The truth: A correctly applied lash extension treatment should be completely painless.
The most uncomfortable thing about a lash extension appointment at a professional studio is lying still for 90 minutes with your eyes closed — which most clients find relaxing rather than painful.
During application, you feel nothing on your lashes because the eye is closed and the extensions are applied with fine tweezers to individual lashes above the eye pad protecting the lower lashes. If you experience any stinging, burning, or irritation during an appointment, it usually means adhesive fumes are reaching your eyes — a sign of poor ventilation, incorrect adhesive curing speed for the room’s humidity, or eye pads that aren’t properly placed.
If you experience any discomfort during a lash extension appointment at any salon, say so immediately. A professional lash artist will stop and correct the issue.
Myth 3: You Can’t Get Lash Extensions Wet
The truth: You can’t get them wet for the first 24 hours. After that, water is not a problem.
This myth comes from a partial truth. In the first 24 hours after application, the adhesive is still completing its cure and water can weaken the bond before it fully sets. But after 24 hours, properly cured lash adhesive is water-resistant — not water-phobic.
You can wash your face normally. You can shower. You can exercise and sweat. You can even swim (though chlorine and salt water over long periods do gradually break down adhesive, so frequent swimming shortens longevity). The key is always to pat lashes dry after getting them wet rather than rubbing.
Steam rooms and saunas are the one exception post-cure — prolonged high heat and steam do soften most lash adhesives and are best avoided. A quick hot shower is fine; a 30-minute steam session is not.
Myth 4: Lash Extensions Always Look Fake and Over-the-Top
The truth: Lash extensions can look completely natural — to the point where people can’t tell you have them.
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings about what lash extensions are. The “spider lashes” look — thick, uniform, heavily-applied clumps that read as obviously artificial — is a specific style choice. It is not what most professional lash extensions look like.
Classic lash extensions, where a single extension is applied to each natural lash in lengths and curls that complement your eye shape, produce results so natural that many clients’ friends and family simply think their lashes grew. The effect enhances what’s already there rather than announcing that something was added.
Volume and hybrid extensions produce more texture and fullness but still look like beautifully full natural lashes rather than something stuck on. The artificial, costume-like look is almost always the result of old-style cluster lashes (temporary extensions glued to multiple lashes at once) or very low-quality synthetic extensions with unnatural shine. These are not what a professional lash extension studio like Nazuri uses.
At your consultation, your lash artist will discuss the look you want — from barely-there natural to full glam — and build your set accordingly.
Myth 5: Eyelash Extensions Are Only for Special Occasions
The truth: Most clients wear lash extensions as a permanent part of their daily beauty routine.
While many clients do book lash extensions before weddings, parties, or important events, the majority of regular clients at Nazuri have worn extensions continuously for months or years. For them, it’s not a special-occasion treatment — it’s a time-saving daily habit.
Think about it: with extensions, mascara becomes unnecessary. Eye makeup in general becomes simpler — your eyes already look defined and awake without any product. For working women in particular, lash extensions can save 10 to 15 minutes of morning makeup time every single day. Over a month, that’s hours returned to your schedule.
Myth 6: Lash Extensions Are the Same as Strip Lashes or Cluster Lashes
The truth: They are completely different products applied using completely different techniques.
Strip lashes and cluster lashes are temporary products that are glued to the skin above your lash line or to groups of natural lashes and removed at the end of the day or event. The glue used is skin-safe but not designed for long-term wear. Strip lashes do not provide the natural look, longevity, or customisation of professional lash extensions.
Individual lash extensions are applied one by one to individual natural lashes using a semi-permanent adhesive. Each extension moves with the natural lash as it grows and sheds naturally. The result looks and moves like natural lashes — because it is attached to them. This is why the maintenance schedule (fills every 2 to 3 weeks) exists — because you’re maintaining extensions on living, growing, shedding lashes.
Myth 7: You’re Stuck with One Look Once You Have Extensions
The truth: You can adjust the style at every fill appointment.
Lash extensions are not permanent in the sense of being locked in. Because they shed with your natural lashes and are replaced at fill appointments, your lash artist can gradually adjust the look at every session. Want to go fuller for a wedding next month? Done. Want to go back to a more natural look after the event season? Also done. Want to try a different curl pattern on your next fill? Easy.
The only limitation is that very dramatic changes — say, moving from mega volume to natural classic — take a couple of fill cycles to achieve cleanly, since you’re working with the existing extensions that haven’t shed yet.
Myth 8: Lash Extensions Are Not Safe for Sensitive Eyes
The truth: The right adhesive and technique make lash extensions accessible to almost everyone — including most people with sensitive eyes.
Allergic reactions to lash extensions do occur, but they are primarily reactions to the cyanoacrylate in standard adhesives, not to lash extensions as a category. For clients with known adhesive sensitivity, alternatives include low-sensitivity adhesives formulated without the most reactive cyanoacrylate compounds, and Novalash — which uses a medical-grade, largely hypoallergenic bonding system.
We always recommend a patch test 48 hours before a first lash extension appointment for anyone with a history of eye or skin sensitivity. The patch test is brief and low-risk — a small number of extensions applied to a few lashes that can be removed immediately if any reaction occurs.
True contraindications for lash extensions are limited: active eye infections (conjunctivitis, styes), recent eye surgery, or severe trichotillomania. For everything else, talk to your lash artist. There is usually a solution.
Myth 9: Lash Extensions Will Look Bad as They Grow Out
The truth: Extensions shed gradually and naturally — they don’t grow out in obvious chunks.
Because extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, they shed as individual natural lashes shed — one at a time, on a rolling basis. Your natural lash growth cycle means you shed approximately 2 to 5 lashes per day. Your full set of natural lashes renews itself over 60 to 90 days.
What this means for extensions is that you won’t wake up one morning to find half your extensions gone. The set thins gradually and evenly. The “grown out” phase looks like a slightly less full version of the original set — not like obvious patches of missing lashes.
This is why fill appointments are recommended at the 2 to 3 week mark — at that point, the set is still recognisable but noticeably less full, and a fill restores density efficiently by replacing what has shed.
Myth 10: Any Salon Can Do Lash Extensions — Certification Doesn’t Matter
The truth: Lash extension quality varies enormously, and certification is the clearest quality signal available.
Eyelash extension application is a skilled, technical procedure that is performed within millimetres of the eye. The difference between a certified, experienced lash artist and an undertrained one is not just aesthetic — it is the difference between safe, beautiful lashes and potential corneal irritation, adhesive burns, or damaged follicles.
In India, the lash extension industry is not regulated the way it is in some other countries. This means anyone can offer the service regardless of training. Certification from recognised bodies — such as Novalash certification, or completion of accredited lash extension training programmes — is the clearest signal of technical competence.
At Nazuri, our lash artists are certified and undergo ongoing training as new products and techniques emerge. Before booking anywhere, ask about your lash artist’s training and certification. It matters more than the price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Do eyelash extensions cause the natural lashes to stop growing?
No. Lash extensions are applied to existing natural lashes and shed with them. The follicle continues its growth cycle unaffected. Extensions do not touch or affect the follicle in any way.
Q2. How do I know if I’m allergic to lash adhesive?
Book a patch test 48 hours before your first appointment. A small number of extensions are applied, and if there’s no reaction — no redness, swelling, or itching — within 48 hours, you are not allergic to the adhesive being used.
Q3. Can I wear mascara with eyelash extensions?
You don’t need to — that’s largely the point. If you feel you want more volume, oil-free water-based mascara can be applied to the tips of extensions only. Never use waterproof mascara on extensions; it requires oil-based remover which breaks down lash adhesive.
Q4. How long do eyelash extensions last?
A full set of classic extensions at Nazuri lasts 4 to 6 weeks before a fill is needed. Volume and hybrid sets are similar. Novalash lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Individual results vary based on your natural lash shedding cycle.
Q5. What’s the youngest age for eyelash extensions?
We recommend 18 and above. For younger clients, a parent or guardian’s consent is required, and we assess natural lash maturity before proceeding.
